1215 Welch Road Research Building

Main content start

The proposed 1215 Welch Road Research Building represents the next step towards replacing several existing outdated School of Medicine (SoM) facilities with a new, state-of-the-art facility and creating a center for human immune-biology research that will ensure the school’s preeminence in the medical research community. An additional objective of the project is to enable the SoM to vacate the seismically deficient Boswell and Grant Buildings. In order to keep the project “GUP neutral”, other SoM buildings will be vacated and demolished as part of the project.

The building will be comprised of three above-grade floors and a basement and will be connected to other research facilities via a new connection to the existing tunnel system. The building design is configured in an L-shape in order to preserve mature trees and an existing landscaped open space which serves as a popular recreational space. The building’s exterior design will be consistent with the SoM’s architectural kit of parts seen in other recently completed SoM buildings. Interior spaces will include flexible lab modules, offices, conference and collaborative spaces.
